How do we close the loop in the furniture industry? How, when, and where can we rethink material consumption in designing and maintaining spaces? How can we make better and more future-proof decisions when working with upholstered furniture in general? These are some of the questions that the new CircularTex Guide addresses.
The guide provides facility managers, designers, and other decision-makers with new perspectives on how to move towards more circular and durable life spans of textiles and upholstered furniture.
CircularTex is the product of a pilot-based research project conducted by Aalborg University in collaboration with Gabriel, CarpetCare, and HOLMRIS B8, with support from the Innovation Fund Denmark. Since 2022, the research has explored circular practices around textile production and use in the furniture industry.
“The purpose […] is to develop and test new textile solutions and value propositions for markets that will lead to a slowing of textile resource loops and have a significant impact on CO2 reductions.”

As a holistic solution provider covering many of the phases in the life cycle of furniture, HOLMRIS B8 is proud to have participated in the project. The project has inspired us to reflect even further on our own processes. It has especially become evident how the relationship between design decisions made fifteen years ago and the subsequent size of potential for reuse and renewal of that furniture today are interdependent.
“As one of the major stakeholders in the market, we are obligated to contribute to projects like this. We aim to be a driving force in changing the business towards a more circular and transparent approach. We ourselves are not perfect, and sustainability can be a messy learning process. However, compared to a few years ago, the amount of furniture we reuse and upcycle is growing from project to project, moving from upgrading designer furniture to now including everything that can be repurposed.”
Frank Nielsen, Head of Business Services. HOLMRIS B8.
The CircularTex guide can be used in decision-making for various projects where the physical interior needs an update. The guide covers a series of topics, addressing the many levels of circular thinking and different types of use that influence the life span of products.
