Reuse and creativity go hand in hand at Aarhus Municipality’s office
Aarhus Municipality has furnished its renovated office building on Bautavej in Aarhus, Denmark, with reused furniture, upcycled furniture, and to a lesser extent, new furniture. The inspiring and activity-based new office environment has been created with a focus on sustainability and creativity by Aarhus Municipality’s own architect, Dominique Hackenberg Haugaard, in collaboration with ERIK architects – and with HOLMRIS B8 as the supplier and executing actor in the upcycling process.
From the very beginning, Aarhus Municipality placed great emphasis on upcycling and reuse in the thoroughly renovated building, which houses Aarhus Properties and the Mayor’s Department. The ideas were numerous and sometimes challenging, but with HOLMRIS B8’s expertise in a dedicated service department, we have given hundreds of used furniture pieces a new life through fresh lacquer, adjustments, repairs, cleaning, and upgrades.
In this way, we have adapted existing and sometimes outdated furniture to meet Aarhus Municipality’s needs for a modern and inviting office with work zones in warm colors that harmonize with the building’s architecture and materials. For example, different chairs have been lacquered in the same color, so despite their different shapes, they match each other.
Along with a minimal number of new furniture pieces, which HOLMRIS B8 also supplied, the upcycled and reused furniture helps to reinforce the building’s architecture, tell a story, emphasize the sustainable focus, and not least create the cozy atmosphere that characterizes Aarhus Municipality’s office on Bautavej.
